During this module, I was able to sit in with a teacher who was using The Preschool Child Observation Record. This is an instrument used to provide systematic assessment of young children's knowledge and abilities in all areas of development. It is often used on preschoolers. We were able to monitor a variety of different categories such as Initiative, Social Relation, Creative Representation, Movement and Music, Language and Literacy and Mathematics and Science. These test were designed to interpret a child's behavior. This helps to create an accurate, useful, objective and comprehensive developmental profile for each child based on what we observed in each category.
This teacher used COR on the child that we had been observing for potential ADHD. After getting the parents involved, we decided to let the parents come in and observed with the teacher and I. From here the parents were able to see how the child interacted with other children, how the child behaved by her self, and how she became easily distracted. Hopefully after observing their child, they would go further with the necessary steps to help this child.
This helps with my advocacy for developmental screening because shows why developmental screening is important in early childhood development. This lets us know if the child has a learning problem or disability earlier in his life, so we can detect it and help the child to get the necessary help they may need. If all the children are learning at the same pace and there is one child who isn't able to catch the lesson, we can detect the developmental delay.
Behavior is key to being ready for the next level of development. You mentioned there was observations done by the family, were you able to have a conversation with them about what was happening with their child? If so, how were they responding? The COR is an interesting tool for assessment. I am curious what the results were and if you have used any other tools?
ReplyDeleteI have to say I am a bit reserved about early intervention for the very young if it is not absolutely clear there is a problem. I feel sometimes it is about maturity and allowing a child to just grow in their unique time. I get why early intervention is important and necessary, but when is it really a good time to actually formally assess for a diagnosis? It is a very gray area for me and I look forward to maybe reading your paper to help me become more clear on this topic.
I am quite impressed with this systematic assessment and how it works. Is this a very useful and accurate tool? How long does each category take? What age can you start using The Preschool Child Observation Record? I am assuming three years old is the time you are able to assess children’s knowledge and their developmental areas. I am very curious about this assessment and would love to learn more about this. I like how you and the teacher were able to bring in the parent in to the room to observe their child and how they interacted. Hopefully, after the assessment they are able to take the necessary steps to help the child. You’ve done a good job with your site work.

I am not familiar with the Preschool Child Observation Record. It sounds like a very good took to have to detect problems and to write down the observations that you have seen. Bringing the parents in was a good idea because some parents become upset and are sometimes in denial about whether something is wrong with their child or not. Hopefully the parents will be cooperative with you and the teacher so that they can get their child the help that they need. And like you said early detection is the best way to provide the proper assistance that the child may need.
ReplyDeleteI want to tell you I have enjoyed following your blog the whole time. You had a lot of information and interesting stuff to write about. I found your blogs to be personal as well as humbled. I encourage you to keep advocating for early intervention and keep your progress on this blog so I can visit and see how you are doing. Take care and thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have really appreciated the feedback that I got about my topics. It was good to get a second opinion from other people about the issues I was faced with while learning about my topics. I really enjoyed educating some people on one of the important services of Head Start. The dental clinic is a valuable asset to have for the children and their families. Some people had never heard of it before and I was excited to fill them in. I hope the best for you as you move onto your next classes and next phase in life. Thank you for all of your feedback.
ReplyDeleteI feel it is important bring parents into the classroom not only for them to see how there child is in the classroom. I also feel that its important for parents to come into the classroom because then the children see that their parents feel what they are doing is important. I feel that some student show signs of ADHD when they want attention. ADHD at young age is hard because you don't know if its the diet, if they want attention, if something is going on at home. It sounds like your learned a lot. I really would like to get into early intervention. Thanks for you write up .
